Alif-Lam-Ra*; these are verses of the Book of wisdom. (*alphabets of the Arabic language; Allah and to whomever He reveals, know their precise meanings.)

یہ حکمت والی کتاب کی آیتیں ہیں،

Are people amazed that We have sent to a man among them, the divine revelation that “Warn the people and convey glad tidings to the believers that for them with their Lord is the place* of truth”? The disbelievers say, “Indeed he is an open magician.” (* Positions of honour on the Day of Resurrection or in heaven.)

کیا لوگوں کو اس کا اچنبا ہوا کہ ہم نے ان میں سے ایک مرد کو وحی بھیجی کہ لوگوں کو ڈر سناؤ اور ایمان والوں کو خوشخبری دو کہ ان کے لیے ان کے رب کے پاس سچ کا مقام ہے، کافر بولے بیشک یہ تو کھلا جادوگر ہے

Indeed your Lord is Allah Who created the heavens and the earth in six days, then as befits His Majesty, established Himself upon the Throne* – He plans all matters; there is no intercessor except after His permission;* such is Allah, your Lord – therefore worship Him; so do you not ponder? (* Of Control over everything.** Prophet Mohammed (peace and blessings be upon him) will be the first to be granted permission to intercede.)

بیشک تمہارا رب اللہ ہے جس نے آسمان اور زمین چھ دن میں بنائے پھر عرش پر استوا فرمایا جیسا اس کی شان کے لائق ہے کام کی تدبیر فرما تا ہے کوئی سفارشی نہیں مگر اس کی اجازت کے بعد یہ ہے اللہ تمہارا رب تو اس کی بندگی کرو تو کیا تم دھیان نہیں کرتے،

Towards Him only you all are to return; the promise of Allah; indeed He creates for the first time and then after its extinction creates it again, in order to give those who believe and do good deeds, the reward of justice; and for the disbelievers, boiling water to drink and a painful punishment – the recompense of their disbelief.

اسی کی طرف تم سب کو پھرنا ہے اللہ کا سچا وعدہ بیشک وہ پہلی بار بناتا ہے پھر فنا کے بعد دوبارہ بنائے گا کہ ان کو جو ایمان لائے اور اچھے کام کیے انصاف کا صلہ دے اور کافروں کے لیے پینے کو کھولتا پانی اور دردناک عذاب بدلہ ان کے کفر کا،

It is He Who created the sun radiating and the moon shining and appointed positions for it, for you to know the number of the years, and the account; Allah has not created it except with the truth; He explains the verses in detail for the people of knowledge.

وہی ہے جس نے سورج کو جگمگاتا بنا یا اور چاند چمکتا اور اس کے لیے منزلیں ٹھہرائیں کہ تم برسوں کی گنتی اور حساب جانو، اللہ نے اسے نہ بنایا مگر حق نشانیاں مفصل بیان فرماتا ہے علم والوں کے لیے

Indeed in the alternation of the day and night, and all that Allah has created in the heavens and the earth, are signs for people who are pious.

بیشک رات اور دن کا بدلتا آنا اور جو کچھ اللہ نے آسمانوں اور زمین میں پیدا کیا ان میں نشانیاں ہیں ڈر والوں کے لیے،

Indeed those who do not expect to meet Us and have preferred the worldly life and are content with it, and those who neglect Our signs, –

بیشک وہ جو ہمارے ملنے کی امید نہیں رکھتے اور دنیا کی زندگی پسند کر بیٹھے اور اس پر مطمئن ہوگئے اور وہ جو ہماری آیتوں سے غفلت کرتے ہیں

Their destination is hell – the recompense of their deeds.

ان لوگوں کا ٹھکانا دوزخ ہے بدلہ ان کی کمائی کا،

Indeed those who accepted faith and did good deeds, their Lord will guide them due to their faith; rivers will flow beneath them in the Gardens of favours.

بیشک جو ایمان لائے اور اچھے کام کیے ان کا رب ان کے ایمان کے سبب انھیں راہ دے گا ان کے نیچے نہریں بہتی ہوں گی نعمت کے باغوں میں،

Their prayers in it will be, “Purity is to You, O Allah” and their greetings in it will be, “Peace”; and the conclusion of their prayers is, “All praise is to Allah, the Lord Of The Creation.”

ان کی دعا اس میں یہ ہوگی کہ اللہ تجھے پاکی ہے اور ان کے ملتے وقت خوشی کا پہلا بول سلام ہے اور ان کی دعا کا خاتمہ یہ ہے کہ سب خوبیوں کو سراہا اللہ جو رب ہے سارے جہان کا

Were Allah to send misfortune to the people as quickly as they hasten for the good*, their appointed term would have been finished; so We leave those who do not expect to meet Us, to wander in their rebellion. (* The way they wish the good to reach them quickly.)

اور اگر اللہ لوگوں پر برائی ایسی جلدبھیجتا جیسی وہ بھلائی کی جلدی کرتے ہیں تو ان کا وعدہ پورا ہوچکا ہوتا تو ہم چھوڑتے انہیں جو ہم سے ملنے کی امید نہیں رکھتے کہ اپنی سرکشی میں بھٹکا کریں

And when some hardship reaches man he prays to Us, while reclining and sitting and standing; and when We remove his hardship, he goes away as if he had never prayed to Us because of any hardship; this is how the deeds of the transgressors are made seeming good to them.

اور جب آدمی کو تکلیف پہنچتی ہے ہمیں پکارتا ہے لیٹے اور بیٹھے اور کھڑے پھر جب ہم اس کی تکلیف دور کردیتے ہیں چل دیتا ہے گویا کبھی کسی تکلیف کے پہنچنے پر ہمیں پکارا ہی نہ تھا یونہی بھلے کر دکھائے ہیں حد سے بڑھنے والے کو ان کے کام

And indeed We destroyed several generations before you when they crossed the limits – and their respective Noble Messengers came to them with clear proofs, but they were not such as would believe; this is how We reward the guilty.

اور بیشک ہم نے تم سے پہلی سنگتیں (قومیں) ہلاک فرمادیں جب وہ حد سے بڑھے اور ان کے رسول ان کے پاس روشن دلیلیں لے کر آئے اور وہ ایسے تھے ہی نہیں کہ ایمان لاتے، ہم یونہی بدلہ دیتے ہیں مجرموں کو،

Then We appointed you as caliphs in the earth after them, in order that We might see what deeds you perform.

پھر ہم نے ان کے بعد تمہیں زمین میں جانشین کیا کہ دیکھیں تم کیسے کام کرتے ہو

And when Our clear verses are recited to them, the people who do not expect to meet Us say, “Bring a Qur’an other than this one, or change it”; say (O dear Prophet Mohammed – peace and blessings be upon him), “I do not have the right to change it on my own; I only follow what is divinely revealed to me; if I were to disobey my Lord*, then I fear the punishment of the Great Day (of Resurrection). (* Which is impossible.)

اور جب ان پر ہماری روشن آیتیں پڑھی جاتی ہیں تو وہ کہنے لگتے ہیں جنہیں ہم سے ملنے کی امید نہیں کہ اس کے سوا اور قرآن لے آیئے یا اسی کو بدل دیجیے تم فرماؤ مجھے نہیں پہنچتا کہ میں اسے اپنی طرف سے بدل دوں میں تو اسی کا تابع ہوں جو میری طرف وحی ہوتی ہے میں اگر اپنے رب کی نافرمانی کروں تو مجھے بڑے دن کے عذاب کا ڈر ہے

Say, “Had Allah willed I would not have recited it to you nor would He have made it known to you; so before this* I have spent an age among you; so do you not have sense?” (* Before Allah’s command to recite the Qur’an to you.)

تم فرماؤ اگر اللہ چاہتا تو میں اسے تم پر نہ پڑھتا نہ وہ تم کو اس سے خبردار کرتا تو میں اس سے پہلے تم میں اپنی ایک عمر گزار چکا ہوں تو کیا تمہیں عقل نہیں

So who is more unjust than one who fabricates a lie concerning Allah and denies His signs? Indeed the guilty shall never prosper.

تو اس سے بڑھ کر ظالم کون جو اللہ پر جھوٹ باندھے یا اس کی آیتیں جھٹلائے، بیشک مجرموں کا بھلا نہ ہوگا،

And they worship the thing other than Allah, which neither harms them nor benefits them*, and they say, “These are our intercessors** before Allah”; say, “What! You inform Allah of something which in His knowledge does not exist in the heavens or in the earth?” Purity and Supremacy are to Him, above their association. (* Some things like the sun, stars, trees are useful but they too are created by Allah. Their worship will not benefit – in fact it is harmful ** Only the virtuous will be granted permission by Allah to intercede.)

اور اللہ کے سوا ایسی چیز کو پوجتے ہیں جو ان کا کچھ بھلا نہ کرے اور کہتے ہیں کہ یہ اللہ کے یہاں ہمارے سفارشی ہیں تم فرماؤ کیا اللہ کو وہ بات بتاتے ہو جو اس کے علم میں نہ آسمانوں میں ہے نہ زمین میں اسے پاکی اور برتری ہے ان کے شرک سے،

Mankind were only one nation* and then they differed, and had it not been for a promise** from your Lord, the matters in which they differed would have been decided here itself. (* On one proper faith. ** The account on the Last Day.)

اور لوگ ایک ہی امت تھے پھر مختلف ہوئے، اور اگر تیرے رب کی طرف سے ایک بات پہلے نہ ہوچکی ہوتی تو یہیں ان کے اختلافوں کا ان پر فیصلہ ہوگیا ہوتا

And they say, “Why is not a sign sent down upon him from his Lord?” Proclaim, (O dear Prophet Mohammed – peace and blessings be upon him), “The hidden is only for Allah, therefore wait; I too am waiting with you.”

اور کہتے ہیں ان پر ان کے رب کی طرف سے کوئی نشانی کیوں نہیں اتری تم فرماؤ غیب تو اللہ کے لیے ہے اب راستہ دیکھو میں بھی تمہارے ساتھ راہ دیکھ رہا ہوں،

And when We give mankind the taste of mercy after some hardship which had afflicted them, they immediately start conspiring against Our signs; proclaim, “The secret plan of Allah is the fastest”; indeed Our angels record your scheming.

اور جب کہ ہمارے آدمیوں کو رحمت کا مزہ دیتے ہیں کسی تکلیف کے بعد جو انہیں پہنچی تھی جبھی وہ ہماری آیتوں کے ساتھ داؤں چلتے ہیں تم فرمادو اللہ کی خفیہ تدبیر سب سے جلد ہوجاتی ہے بیشک ہمارے فرشتے تمہارے مکر لکھ رہے ہیں

It is He Who transports you over the land and the sea; to the extent that when you are in ships – and the ships sail with them with a favourable breeze and they rejoice at it – a gust of strong wind reaches them and waves come to them from every side and they realise that they are surrounded, – thereupon they pray to Allah as His sincere bondmen that, “If You rescue us from this, we will surely be thankful.”

وہی ہے کہ تمہیں خشکی اور تری میں چلاتا ہے یہاں تک کہ جب تم کشتی میں ہو اور وہ اچھی ہوا سے انھیں لے کر چلیں اور اس پر خوش ہوئے ان پر آندھی کا جھونکا آیا اور ہر طرف لہروں نے انہیں آلیا اور سمجھ لے کہ ہم گِھر گئے اس وقت اللہ کو پکارتے ہیں نرے اس کے بندے ہوکر، کہ اگر تو اس سے ہمیں بچالے گا تو ہم ضرور شکر گزار ہوں گے

Then when He rescues them, they start wrongfully committing oppression in the earth; O mankind! Your oppression is only a torment against yourselves; derive the benefit until you live in this world; you have then to return to Us and thereupon We shall show you your misdeeds.

پھر اللہ جب انہیں بچا لیتا ہے جبھی وہ زمین میں ناحق زیادتی کرنے لگتے ہیں اے لوگو! تمہاری زیادتی تمہارے ہی جانوں کا وبال ہے دنیا کے جیتے جی برت لو (فائد اٹھالو)، پھر تمہیں ہماری طرف پھرنا ہے اس وقت ہم تمہیں جتادیں گے جو تمہارے کوتک تھے

The example of the life of this world is similar to the water which We sent down from the sky, so due to it the earth’s vegetation grew in abundance – that which men and cattle eat; to the extent that when the earth has taken on her ornaments and is well beautified, and her owners thought that it is within their control, Our command came to it at night or at day – so We made it harvested as if it had not existed yesterday; this is how We explain the verses for the people who ponder.

دنیا کی زندگی کی کہا وت تو ایسی ہی ہے جیسے وہ پانی کہ ہم نے آسمان سے اتارا تو اس کے سبب زمین سے اگنے والی چیزیں سب گھنی ہوکر نکلیں جو کچھ آدمی اور چوپائے کھاتے ہیں یہاں تک کہ جب زمین میں اپنا سنگھار لے لیا اور خوب آراستہ ہوگئی اور اس کے مالک سمجھے کہ یہ ہمارے بس میں آگئی ہمارا حکم اس پر آیا رات میں یا دن میں تو ہم نے اسے کردیا کاٹی ہوئی گویا کل تھی ہی نہیں ہم یونہی آیتیں مفصل بیان کرتے ہیں غور کرنے والوں کے لیے

And Allah calls to the abode of peace, and guides whomever He wills on the Straight Path.

اور اللہ سلامتی کے گھر کی طرف پکارتا ہے اور جسے چاہے سیدھی راہ چلاتا ہے

For the people of virtue, is goodness and more than that; and neither will the blackness nor disgrace come upon their faces; it is they who are the people of Paradise; they will abide in it forever.

بھلائی والوں کے لیے بھلائی ہے اور اس سے بھی زائد اور ان کے منہ پر نہ چڑھے گی سیاہی اور نہ خواری وہی جنت والے ہیں وہ اس میں ہمیشہ رہیں گے،

And (for) those who earned evil*, the recompense of evil is equal to it – and disgrace will come upon them; they will have no one to save them from Allah; as if their faces are covered with pieces of the dark night; it is they who are the people of the fire; they will remain in it forever. (* The disbelievers.)

اور جنہوں نے برائیاں کمائیں تو برائی کا بدلہ اسی جیسا اور ان پر ذلت چڑھے گی، انہیں اللہ سے بچانے والا کوئی نہ ہوگا، گویا ان کے چہروں پر اندھیری رات کے ٹکڑے چڑھا دیئے ہیں وہی دوزخ والے ہیں، وہ اس میں ہمیشہ رہیں گے،

And on the day when We raise all of them together, then say to the polytheists, “Stay in your place – you and your partners (false deities)”; so We shall separate them from the believers, and their partners will say to them, “When did you ever worship us!?”

اور جس دن ہم ان سب کو اٹھائیں گے پھر مشرکوں سے فرمائیں گے اپنی جگہ رہو تم اور تمہارے شریک تو ہم انہیں مسلمانوں سے جدا کردیں گے اور ان کے شریک ان سے کہیں گے تم ہمیں کب پوجتے تھے

“Therefore Allah suffices as a Witness between us and you, that we were not even aware that you worshipped us!”

تو اللہ گواہ کافی ہے ہم میں اور تم میں کہ ہمیں تمہارے پوجنے کی خبر بھی نہ تھی،

Here will every soul come to know what it has sent ahead, and they will be returned to Allah – their true Master, and they will lose all that they used to fabricate.

یہاں ہر جان جا نچ لے گی جو آگے بھیجا اور اللہ کی طرف پھیرے جائیں گے جو ان کا سچا مولیٰ ہے اور ان کی ساری بناوٹیں ان سے گم ہوجائیں گی

Say, (O dear Prophet Mohammed – peace and blessings be upon him), “Who provides you sustenance from the sky and the earth? Or Who is the Owner of the ears and the eyes? And Who brings forth the living from the dead and Who brings forth the dead from the living? And Who plans all matters?” So they will now say, “Allah”; therefore say, “Then why do you not fear?”

تم فرماؤ تمہیں کون روزی دیتا ہے آسمان اور زمین سے یا کون مالک ہے کان اور آنکھوں کا اور کون نکالتا ہے زندہ کو مردے سے اور نکالتا ہے مردہ کو زندہ سے اور کون تمام کاموں کی تدبیر کرتا ہے تو اب کہیں گے کہ اللہ تو تم فرماؤ تو کیوں نہیں ڈرتے

So such is Allah, your True Lord; therefore what remains after the truth, except error? So where are you reverting?

تو یہ اللہ ہے تمہارا سچا رب پھر حق کے بعد کیا ہے مگر گمراہی پھر کہاں پھرے جاتے ہو،

This is how the Word of your Lord is proved concerning the sinful, so they will not believe.

یونہی ثابت ہوچکی ہے تیرے رب کی بات فاسقوں پر تو وہ ایمان نہیں لائیں گے،

Say, “Is there any one among your partners (false deities) that can create for the first time and then after its extinction, create it again?” Proclaim, “Allah creates for the first time and then after its extinction, creates it again – so where are you reverting?”

تم فرماؤ تمہارے شریکوں میں کوئی ایسا ہے کہ اول بنائے پھر فنا کے بعد دوبارہ بنائے تم فرماؤ اللہ اوّل بناتا ہے پھر فنا کے بعد دوبارہ بنائے گا تو کہاں اوندھے جاتے ہو

Say, “Is there any among your partners that shows the right path?” Say, “Allah shows the right path; so who should be obeyed – the One Who shows the right path, or one who does not even find the right path unless he is guided? So what has happened to you? What sort of a judgement you impose!”

تم فرماؤ تمہارے شریکوں میں کوئی ایسا ہے کہ حق کی راہ دکھائے تم فرماؤ کہ اللہ حق کی راہ دکھاتا ہے، تو کیا جو حق کی راہ دکھائے اس کے حکم پر چلنا چاہیے یا اس کے جو خود ہی راہ نہ پائے جب تک راہ نہ دکھایا جائے تو تمہیں کیا ہوا کیسا حکم لگاتے ہو،

And most of them do not follow anything except assumptions; indeed assumption does not serve the least purpose (in place) of the truth; indeed Allah knows their deeds.

اور ان میں اکثر تو نہیں چلتے مگر گمان پر بیشک گمان حق کا کچھ کام نہیں دیتا، بیشک اللہ ان کاموں کو جانتا ہے،

And this noble Qur’an is not such that anyone can invent it, without Allah revealing it – but it surely is a confirmation of the Books preceding it and is an explanation of all that is written on the (preserved) tablet – there is no doubt in it – it is from the Lord Of The Creation.

اور اس قرآن کی یہ شان نہیں کہ کوئی اپنی طرف سے بنالے بے اللہ کے اتارے ہاں وہ اگلی کتابوں کی تصدیق ہے اور لوح میں جو کچھ لکھا ہے سب کی تفصیل ہے اس میں کچھ شک نہیں ہے پروردگار عالم کی طرف سے ہے،

What! They dare say that “He has fabricated it”? Say, “Then bring one chapter like it and, other than Allah, call everyone you can if you are truthful.”

کیا یہ کہتے ہیں کہ انہوں نے اسے بنالیا ہے تم فرماؤ تو اس جیسی کوئی ایک سورة لے آؤ اور اللہ کو چھوڑ کر جو مل سکیں سب کو بلا لاؤ اگر تم سچے ہو،

On the contrary, they denied the thing the knowledge of which they could not master, whereas they have not yet seen its outcome; similarly those before them had denied, therefore see what sort of fate befell the unjust!

بلکہ اسے جھٹلایا جس کے علم پر قابو نہ پایا اور ابھی انہوں نے اس کا انجام نہیں دیکھا ایسے ہی ان سے اگلوں نے جھٹلایا تھا تو دیکھو ظالموں کیسا انجام ہوا

And among them is one who accepts faith in it, and among them is one who does not accept faith in it; and your Lord well knows the mischievous.

اور ان میں کوئی اس پر ایمان لاتا ہے اور ان میں کوئی اس پر ایمان نہیں لاتا ہے، اور تمہارا رب مفسدوں کو خوب جانتا ہے

And if they deny you, say, “For me are my deeds, and for you are your deeds; you have no concern with what I do, and I have no relation with what you do.”

اور اگر وہ تمہیں جھٹلائیں تو فرمادو کہ میرے لیے میری کرنی اور تمہارے لیے تمہاری کرنی (اعمال) تمہیں میرے کام سے علاقہ نہیں اور مجھے تمہارے کام سے لاتعلق نہیں

And among them are some who listen to you; so will you make the deaf hear even if they do not have any sense?

اور ان میں کوئی وہ ہیں جو تمہاری طرف کان لگاتے ہیں تو کیا تم بہروں کو سنا دو گے اگرچہ انہیں عقل نہ ہو

And among them is one who gazes at you; so will you guide the blind* even if they cannot perceive? (* Deaf or blind to guidance.)

اور ان میں کوئی تمہاری طرف تکتا ہے کیا تم اندھوں کو راہ دکھا دو گے اگرچہ وہ نہ سوجھیں،

Indeed Allah does not oppress men at all, but they do wrong themselves.

بیشک اللہ لوگوں پر کچھ ظلم نہیں کرتا ہاں لوگ ہی اپنی جانوں پر ظلم کرتے ہیں

And on the day when He will raise all of them together, as if they had never stayed on earth except for a moment during the day, they will recognise one another; for completely ruined are those who denied the meeting with Allah and were not on guidance.

اور جس دن انہیں اٹھائے گا گویا دنیا میں نہ رہے تھے مگر اس دن کی ایک گھڑی آپس میں پہچان کریں گے کہ پورے گھاٹے میں رہے وہ جنہوں نے اللہ سے ملنے کو جھٹلایا اور ہدایت پر نہ تھے

And whether We show you (O dear Prophet Mohammed – peace and blessings be upon him) part of what We promise them or whether We call you towards Us before it – in any case they have to return to Us – then Allah is the Witness of their deeds.

اور اگر ہم تمہیں دکھا دیں کچھ اس میں سے جو انہیں وعدہ دے رہے ہیں یا تمہیں پہلے ہی اپنے پاس بلالیں بہرحال انہیں ہماری طرف پلٹ کر آنا ہے پھر اللہ گواہ ہے ان کے کاموں پر،

And in every nation was a Noble Messenger (from Allah); so when their Noble Messenger came to them, they were judged with fairness, and they were not wronged.

اور ہر امت میں ایک رسول ہوا جب ان کا رسول ان کے پاس آتا ان پر انصاف کا فیصلہ کردیا جاتا اور ان پر ظلم نہیں ہوتا،

And they say, “When will this promise come, if you are truthful?”

اور کہتے ہیں یہ وعدہ کب آئے گا اگر تم سچے ہو

Say, “I have no autonomy to benefit or hurt myself, except what Allah wills*; for every nation is a fixed promise; when their promise comes, they cannot postpone it nor can they advance it one moment. (* To empower me.)

تم فرماؤ میں اپنی جان کے برے بھلے کا (ذاتی) اختیار نہیں رکھتا مگر جو اللہ چاہے ہر گروہ کا ایک وعدہ ہے جب ان کا وعدہ آئے گا تو ایک گھڑی نہ پیچھے ہٹیں نہ آگے بڑھیں،

Say, “What is your opinion – if His punishment comes upon you at night or during the day, so what is there in it for which the guilty are being hasty?”

تم فرماؤ بھلا بتاؤ تو اگر اس کا عذاب تم پر رات کو آئے یا دن کو تو اس میں وہ کونسی چیز ہے کہ مجرموں کو جس کی جلدی ہے،

“So will you believe it only when it has occurred? What! You believe in it now, whereas you were impatient* for it before? (* Eagerly demanding for it to occur.)

تو کیا جب ہو پڑے گا اس وقت اس کا یقین کرو گے کیا اب مانتے ہو پہلے تو اس کی جلدی مچارہے تھے،

Then the unjust will be told, “Taste the punishment forever; and you will be repaid only what you used to earn.”

پھر ظالموں سے کہا جائے گا ہمیشہ کا عذاب چکھو تمہیں کچھ اور بدلہ نہ ملے گا مگر وہی جو کماتے تھے

And they ask you “Is it a reality*?” Say, “Yes, by oath of my Lord, indeed surely it is a reality, and you will not be able to escape.” (* The punishment of the hereafter.)

اور تم سے پوچھتے ہیں کیا وہ حق ہے، تم فرماؤ، ہاں! میرے رب کی قسم بیشک وہ ضرور حق ہے، اور تم کچھ تھکا نہ سکو گے

And if each unjust soul owned everything that is in the earth, it would have certainly given it in order to redeem itself; and they secretly felt repentant when they saw the punishment; and it has been judged between them with fairness and they will not be wronged.

اور اگر ہر ظالم جان، زمین میں جو کچھ ہے سب کی مالک ہوتی، ضرور اپنی جان چھڑانے میں دیتی اور دل میں چپکے چپکے پشیمان ہوئے جب عذاب دیکھا اور ان میں انصاف سے فیصلہ کردیا گیا اور ان پر ظلم نہ ہوگا،

Pay heed! Indeed everything that is in the heavens and the earth belongs only to Allah; pay heed! Indeed Allah’s promise is true, but most of them do not know.

سن لو بیشک اللہ ہی کا ہے جو کچھ آسمانوں میں ہے اور زمین میں سن لو بیشک اللہ کا وعدہ سچا ہے مگر ان میں اکثر کو خبر نہیں،

And He gives life and gives death, and towards Him you will return.

وہ جِلاتا اور مارتا ہے اور اسی کی طرف پھرو گے،

O mankind! The advice has come to you from your Lord and a cure for the hearts – and guidance and mercy for believers.

اے لوگو! تمہارے پاس تمہارے رب کی طرف سے نصیحت آئی اور دلوں کی صحت اور ہدایت اور رحمت ایمان والوں کے لیے،

Say, “Upon Allah’s munificence and upon His mercy – upon these should the people rejoice”; that is better than all their wealth and possessions.

تم فرماؤ اللہ ہی کے فضل اور اسی کی رحمت اور اسی پر چاہیے کہ خوشی کریں وہ ان کے سب دھن دولت سے بہتر ہے،

Say, “What is your opinion – (regarding) the sustenance that Allah has sent down for you? So you have, on your own, deemed lawful and unlawful in it!”; say, “Has Allah given you permission for it, or do you fabricate a lie against Allah?”

تم فرماؤ بھلا بتاؤ تو وہ جو اللہ نے تمہارے لیے رزق اتارا اس میں تم نے اپنی طرف سے حرام و حلال ٹھہرالیا تم فرماؤ کیا اللہ نے اس کی تمہیں اجازت دی یا اللہ پر جھوٹ باندھتے ہو

And what do they, who fabricate lies against Allah, assume will be their state on the Day of Resurrection? Indeed Allah is Most Munificent upon mankind, but most people are not thankful.

اور کیا گمان ہے ان کا، جو اللہ پر جھوٹ باندھتے ہیں کہ قیامت میں ان کا کیا حال ہوگا، بیشک اللہ لوگوں پر فضل کرتا ہے مگر اکثر لوگ شکر نہیں کرتے،

And whatever work you (O dear Prophet Mohammed – peace and blessings be upon him) are engaged in and recite a part of the Qur’an from Him, and whatever you people do, We are Witness upon you from the time you begin it; and there is nothing in the earth or in the heaven worth the weight of the smallest particle hidden from your Lord, nor anything smaller or greater than it, which is not recorded in a clear Book.

اور تم کسی کام میں ہو اور اس کی طرف سے کچھ قرآن پڑھو اور تم لوگ کوئی کام کرو ہم تم پر گواہ ہوتے ہیں جب تم اس کو شروع کرتے ہو، اور تمہارے رب سے ذرہ بھر کوئی چیز غائب نہیں زمین میں نہ آسمان میں اور نہ اس سے چھوٹی اور نہ اس سے بڑی کوئی چیز نہیں جو ایک روشن کتاب میں نہ ہو

Pay heed! Indeed upon the friends of Allah is neither any fear, nor any grief. (The friends of Allah are the best in the creation.)

سن لو بیشک اللہ کے ولیوں پر نہ کچھ خو ف ہے نہ کچھ غم

Those who have accepted faith and practice piety.

وہ جو ایمان لائے اور پرہیزگاری کرتے ہیں،

There are good tidings for them in the life of this world and in the Hereafter; the Words of Allah cannot change; this is the supreme success.

انہیں خوشخبری ہے دنیا کی زندگی میں اور آخرت میں، اللہ کی باتیں بدل نہیں سکتیں یہی بڑی کامیابی ہے،

And do not grieve at their speech (O dear Prophet Mohammed – peace and blessings be upon him); indeed all honour is for Allah and He is the All Hearing, the All Knowing.

اور تم ان کی باتو ں کا غم نہ کرو بیشک عزت ساری اللہ کے لیے ہے وہی سنتا جانتا ہے،

Indeed all those in the heavens and all those in the earth are in Allah’s control; and what do those who pray to the partners instead of Allah, follow? They do not follow anything except assumption, and they only make guesses.

سن لو بیشک اللہ ہی کے مِلک ہیں جتنے آسمانوں میں ہیں اور جتنے زمینوں میں اور کاہے کے پیچھے جارہے ہیں وہ جو اللہ کے سوا شریک پکار رہے ہیں، وہ تو پیچھے نہیں جاتے مگر گمان کے اور وہ تو نہیں مگر اٹکلیں دوڑاتے

It is He Who created the night for you so that you may gain rest in it and the day giving sight; indeed in this are signs for the people who heed.

وہی ہے جس نے تمہارے لیے رات بنائی کہ اس میں چین پاؤ اور دن بنایا تمہاری آنکھوں کھولتا بیشک اس میں نشانیاں ہیں سننے والوں کے لیے

They said, “Allah has created a son for Himself”- Purity is to Him! He is the Perfect (Unwanting, free of needs); to Him only belongs all whatever is in the heavens and all whatever is in the earth; “You do not have any proof of this; do you say a thing concerning Allah which you do not know?”

بولے اللہ نے اپنے لیے اولاد بنائی پاکی اس کو، وہی بے نیاز ہے، اسی کا ہے جو کچھ آسمانوں میں ہے اور جو کچھ زمین میں تمہارے پاس اس کی کوئی بھی سند نہیں، کیا اللہ پر وہ بات بتاتے ہو جس کا تمہیں علم نہیں،

Say, “Indeed those who fabricate lies against Allah will never succeed.”

تم فرماؤ وہ جو اللہ پر جھوٹ باندھتے ہیں ان کا بھلا نہ ہوگا،

Enjoying a little in the earth, they have then to return to Us – We will then make them taste a severe punishment, the recompense of their disbelief.

دنیا میں کچھ برت لینا (فائدہ اٹھانا) ہے پھر انہیں ہماری طرف واپس آنا پھر ہم انہیں سخت عذاب چکھائیں گے بدلہ ان کے کفر کا،

Read to them the story of Nooh; when he told his people, “O my people – if my standing here and reminding you of Allah’s signs have been intolerable for you – so I have trusted only Allah – then work jointly and strengthen your work along with your false deities, leaving no doubt regarding your work – then do whatever you can to me, and do not give me respite.”

اور انہیں نوح کی خبر پڑھ کر سناؤ جب اس نے اپنی قوم سے کہا اے میری قوم اگر تم پر شاق گزرا ہے میرا کھڑا ہونا اور اللہ کی نشانیاں یاد دلانا تو میں نے اللہ ہی پر بھروسہ کیا تو مِل کر کام کرو اور اپنے جھوٹے معبودوں سمیت اپنا کام پکا کرلو تمہارے کام میں تم پر کچھ گنجلک (الجھن) نہ رہے پھر جو ہو سکے میرا کرلو اور مجھے مہلت نہ دو

“Then if you turn away, I do not ask any fee from you; my reward is only upon Allah, and I am commanded to be of the Muslims.”

پھر اگر تم منہ پھیرو تو میں تم سے کچھ اجرت نہیں مانگتا میرا اجر تو نہیں مگر اللہ پر اور مجھے حکم ہے کہ میں مسلمانوں سے ہوں،

In response they denied him, so We rescued him and those with him in the ship, and made them caliphs, and We drowned those who denied Our signs; therefore see what sort of fate befell those who had been warned!

تو انہوں نے اسے جھٹلایا تو ہم نے اسے اور جو اس کے ساتھ کشتی میں تھے ان کو نجات دی اور انہیں ہم نے نائب کیا اور جنہوں نے ہماری آیتیں جھٹلائیں ان کو ہم نے ڈبو دیا تو دیکھو ڈرائے ہوؤں کا انجام کیسا ہوا،

Then after him, We sent other Noble Messengers to their respective people – so they came to them with clear proofs – so they were not such as to believe in what they had denied before; this is how We set seals upon the hearts of rebels.

پھر اس کے بعد اور رسول ہم نے ان کی قوموں کی طرف بھیجے تو وہ ان کے پاس روشن دلیلیں لائے تو وہ ایسے نہ تھے کہ ایمان لاتے اس پر جسے پہلے جھٹلا چکے تھے، ہم یونہی مہر لگادیتے ہیں سرکشوں کے دلوں پر،

Then after them, We sent Moosa and Haroon along with Our signs, to Firaun and his court members, so they were proud and were a guilty people.

پھر ان کے بعد ہم نے موسٰی اور ہارون کو فرعون اور اس کے درباریوں کی طرف اپنی نشانیاں دے کر بھیجا تو انہوں نے تکبر کیا اور وہ مجرم لوگ تھے،

So when the truth came to them from Us, they said, “Indeed this is a clear magic.”

تو جب ان کے پاس ہماری طرف سے حق آیا بولے یہ تو ضرور کھلا جادو ہے،

Said Moosa, “What! You speak in this manner regarding the truth when it has come to you? Is this magic? And magicians never succeed.”

موسیٰ نے کہا کیا حق کی نسبت ایسا کہتے ہو جب وہ تمہارے پاس آیا کیا یہ جادو ہے اور جادوگر مراد کو نہیں پہنچتے،

They said, “Have you two come to us to revert us from what we found our fathers upon, and that the leadership in the land may only be for you two? And we shall never believe in you both.”

بولے کیا تم ہمارے پاس اس لیے آئے ہو کہ ہمیں اس سے پھیردو جس پر ہم نے اپنے باپ دادا کو پایا اور زمین میں تمہیں دونوں کی بڑائی رہے، اور ہم تم پر ایمان لانے کے نہیں،

And Firaun said, “Bring every expert magician to me.”

اور فرعون بولا ہر جادوگر علم والے کو میرے پاس لے آؤ،

So when the magicians came, Moosa said to them, “Cast whatever you intend to cast.”

پھر جب جادوگر آئے ان سے موسیٰ نے کہا ڈالو جو تمہیں ڈالنا ہے

Therefore when they had cast, Moosa said, “This what you have brought, is magic; Allah will now make it void; indeed Allah does not make the works of the mischievous successful.”

پھر جب انہوں نے ڈالا موسیٰ نے کہا یہ جو تم لائے یہ جادو ہے اب اللہ اسے باطل کردے گا، اللہ مفسدوں کا کام نہیں بناتا،

“And Allah will prove the truth by His Words, even if the guilty get annoyed.”

اور اللہ اپنی باتوں سے حق کو حق کر دکھاتا ہے پڑے برا مانیں مجرم،

So none accepted faith in Moosa, except a few descendants of his people, fearing Firaun and his court members, that they would force them to revert; and indeed Firaun was a rebel in the land; and indeed he crossed the limits.

تو موسیٰ پر ایمان نہ لائے مگر اس کی قوم کی اولاد سے کچھ لوگ فرعون اور اس کے درباریوں سے ڈرتے ہوئے کہ کہیں انہیں ہٹنے پر مجبور نہ کردیں اور بیشک فرعون زمین پر سر اٹھانے والا تھا، اور بیشک وہ حد سے گزر گیا

And Moosa said, “O my people! If you have accepted faith in Allah, then you should rely only upon Him, if you are Muslims.”

اور موسیٰ نے کہا اے میری قوم اگر تم اللہ پر ایمان لائے تو اسی پر بھروسہ کرو اگر تم اسلام رکھتے ہو،

They said, “We have relied only upon Allah; Our Lord! Do not make us a test* for the unjust people.” (* By giving them power over us.)

بولے ہم نے اللہ پر بھروسہ کیا الہٰی ہم کو ظالم لوگوں کے لیے آزمائش نہ بنا

“And with Your mercy, rescue us from the disbelievers.”

اور اپنی رحمت فرماکر ہمیں کافروں سے نجات دے

And We sent the divine revelation to Moosa and his brother that, “Build houses for your people in Egypt and make your houses as places of worship, and keep the prayer established, and give glad tidings to the Muslims.”

اور ہم نے موسیٰ اور اس کے بھائی کو وحی بھیجی کہ مصر میں اپنی قوم کے لیے مکانات بناؤ اور اپنے گھروں کو نماز کی جگہ کرو اور نماز قائم رکھو، اور مسلمانوں کو خوشخبری سناؤ

And Moosa prayed, “Our Lord! You have given Firaun and his chiefs adornment and wealth in the life of this world, our Lord, that they may lead astray from Your path; our Lord! Destroy their riches and harden their hearts so that they may not accept faith until they witness the painful punishment.”

اور موسیٰ نے عرض کی اے رب ہمارے تو نے فرعون اور اس کے سرداروں کو آرائش اور مال دنیا کی زندگی میں دیے، اے رب ہمارے! اس لیے کہ تیری راہ سے بہکادیں، اے رب ہمارے! ان کے مال برباد کردے اور ان کے دل سخت کردے کہ ایمان نہ لائیں جب تک دردناک عذاب نہ دیکھ لیں

He said, “The prayer of you two is accepted, therefore remain firm, and do not follow the way of the unwise.”

فرمایا تم دونوں کی دعا قبول ہوئی تو ثابت قدم رہو اور نادانوں کی راہ نہ چلو

And We transported the Descendants of Israel across the sea, therefore Firaun and his army pursued them with rebellion and injustice; until when the drowning overcame him he cried, “I accept faith that there is no True God except the One in Whom the Descendants of Israel believe, and I am a Muslim.”

اور ہم بنی اسرائیل کو دریا پار لے گئے تو فرعون اور اس کے لشکروں نے ان کا پیچھا کیا سرکشی اور ظلم سے یہاں تک کہ جب اسے ڈوبنے نے ا ٓ لیا بولا میں ایمان لایا کہ کوئی سچا معبود نہیں سوا اس کے جس پر بنی اسرائیل ایمان لائے اور میں مسلمان ہوں

“What! Now?* Whereas you were disobedient from the start and you were mischievous!” (This was said to Firaun.* Accepting faith at the time of death is of no use.)

کیا اب اور پہلے سے نافرمان رہا اور تو فسادی تھا

“This day We shall salvage your body so that you may be a sign for those after you; and indeed most people are neglectful of Our signs.”

آج ہم تیری لاش کو اوترا دیں (باقی رکھیں) گے تو اپنے پچھلوں کے لیے نشانی ہو اور بیشک لوگ ہما ری آ یتو ں سے غافل ہیں،

And indeed We provided the Descendants of Israel a place of honour, and bestowed good sustenance to them; and they did not fall into dispute except after the knowledge had come to them; indeed your Lord will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection concerning the matters in which they used to differ.

اور بیشک ہم نے بنی اسرائیل کو عزت کی جگہ دی اور انہیں ستھری روزی عطا کی تو اختلاف میں نہ پڑے مگر علم آنے کے بعد بیشک تمہارا رب قیامت کے دن ان میں فیصلہ کردے گا جس بات میں جھگڑتے تھے

And if you, O listener, have any doubt in what We have sent down towards you, then question those who have read the Book before you; undoubtedly, towards you has come the truth from your Lord, therefore do not be of those who doubt.

اور اے سننے والے! اگر تجھے کچھ شبہ ہو اس میں جو ہم نے تیری طرف اتارا تو ان سے پوچھ دیکھ جو تجھ سے پہلے کتاب پڑھنے والے ہیں بیشک تیرے پاس تیرے رب کی طرف سے حق آیا تو تُو ہر گز شک والوں میں نہ ہو،

And never be of those who denied the signs of Allah, for you will then be of the losers.

اور ہرگز ان میں نہ ہونا جنہوں نے اللہ کی آیتیں جھٹلائیں کہ تو خسارے والوں میں ہوجائے گا،

Indeed those for whom the Word of your Lord has proved true, will not believe.

بیشک وہ جن پر تیرے رب کی بات ٹھیک پڑچکی ہے ایمان نہ لائیں گے،

Even if every sign comes to them, until they witness the painful punishment.

اگرچہ سب نشانیاں ان کے پاس آئیں جب تک دردناک عذاب نہ دیکھ لیں

So if only had there been one dwelling* that believed and its belief would have benefited it – except the nation of Yunus (Jonah)! When they accepted faith, We removed the disgraceful punishment in the life of this world from them, and let them enjoy for a while. (* That was destroyed after being warned.)

تو ہوئی ہوتی نہ کوئی بستی کہ ایمان لاتی تو اس کا ایمان کام آتا ہاں یونس کی قوم، جب ایمان لائے ہم نے ان سے رسوائی کا عذاب دنیا کی زندگی میں ہٹادیا اور ایک وقت تک انہیں برتنے دیا

And if your Lord willed, all those who are in the earth – everyone of them – would have accepted faith; so will you (O dear Prophet Mohammed – peace and blessings be upon him) force the people until they become Muslims?

اور اگر تمہارا رب چاہتا زمین میں جتنے ہیں سب کے سب ایمان لے آتے تو کیا تم لوگوں کو زبردستی کرو گے یہاں تک کہ مسلمان ہوجائیں

And no soul can accept faith except by the command of Allah; and He sets the punishment upon those who do not have sense.

اور کسی جان کی قدرت نہیں کہ ایمان لے آئے مگر اللہ کے حکم سے اور عذاب ان پر ڈالنا ہے جنہیں عقل نہیں،

Proclaim, “Observe what is in the heavens and the earth”; and the signs and the Noble Messengers do not benefit the people who are not destined to believe.

تم فرماؤ دیکھو آسمانوں اور زمین میں کیا ہے اور آیتیں اور رسول انہیں کچھ نہیں دیتے جن کے نصیب میں ایمان نہیں،

So what are they waiting for, except the days similar to the days of those who passed away before them? Say, “Then wait! I too am waiting with you.”

تو انہیں کاہے کا انتظار ہے مگر انہیں لوگوں کے سے دنوں کا جو ان سے پہلے ہو گزرے تم فرماؤ تو انتظار کرو میں بھی تمہارے ساتھ انتظار میں ہوں

Then We shall save Our Noble Messengers and the believers – this is it; it is incumbent upon Our mercy to save the Muslims.

پھر ہم اپنے رسولوں اور ایمان والوں کو نجات دیں گے بات یہی ہے ہمارے ذمہ کرم پر حق ہے مسلمانوں کو نجات دینا،

Say (O dear Prophet Mohammed – peace and blessings be upon him), “O people! If you are in doubt concerning my religion, then (know that) I will never worship those whom you worship instead of Allah – but I worship Allah Who will give you death; and I am commanded to be of the believers.”

تم فرماؤ، اے لوگو! اگر تم میرے دین کی طرف سے کسی شبہ میں ہو تو میں تو اسے نہ پوجوں کا جسے تم اللہ کے سوا پوجتے ہو ہاں اس اللہ کو پوجتا ہوں جو تمہاری جان نکالے گا اور مجھے حکم ہے کہ ایمان والوں میں ہوں،

“And that ‘Set your face straight* for religion, apart from all others; and never be of those who ascribe partners (to Allah)’.” (* Your intention sincerely for religion.)

اور یہ کہ اپنا منہ دین کے لیے سیدھا رکھ سب سے الگ ہوکر اور ہرگز شرک والوں میں نہ ہونا،

“And other than Allah, do not worship that which cannot benefit you nor cause you harm; then if you do so, you would be of the unjust.” (* Some things like the sun, stars, trees are useful but they too are created by Allah. Their worship will not benefit – in fact it is harmful.)

اور اللہ کے سوا اس کی بندگی نہ کر جو نہ تیرا بھلا کرسکے نہ برا، پھر اگر ایسا کرے تو اس وقت تو ظالموں سے ہوگا،

“And if Allah afflicts you with some suffering, there is none who can remove it except Him; and if He wills good for you, there is none who can repel His munificence; He bestows it upon whomever He wills from among His bondmen; He is the Oft Forgiving, the Most Merciful.” (* Help, cure, monetary aid etc., whatever benefit derived from any source, reaches us because Allah has given the source this power and is actually through the grace and mercy of Allah.)

اور اگر تجھے اللہ کوئی تکلیف پہنچائے تو اس کا کوئی ٹالنے والا نہیں اس کے سوا، اور اگر تیرا بھلا چاہے تو اس کے فضل کے رد کرنے والا کوئی نہیں اسے پہنچا تا ہے اپنے بندوں میں جسے چاہے، اور وہی بخشنے والا مہربان ہے،

Say, “O people! The truth* has come to you from your Lord; so whoever came to guidance, has come to guidance for his own benefit; and whoever strayed, has strayed for his own harm; and I am not a trustee over you.” (* Prophet Mohammed – peace and blessings be upon him, or Islam or the Qur’an.)

تم فرماؤ اے لوگو! تمہارے پاس تمہارے رب کی طرف سے حق آیا تو جو راہ پر آیا وہ اپنے بھلے کو راہ پر آیا اور جو بہکا وہ اپنے برے کو بہکا اور کچھ میں کڑوڑا (حاکمِ اعلیٰ) نہیں

And (O dear Prophet Mohammed – peace and blessings be upon him) follow what is divinely revealed to you, and have patience till Allah gives His command; and He is the Best of Rulers.

اور اس پر چلو جو تم پر وحی ہوتی ہے اور صبر کرو یہاں تک کہ اللہ حکم فرمائے اور وہ سب سے بہتر حکم فرمانے والا ہے
